Electrolysis – Permanent Hair Removal for Bikini Line

by Sarah Paskel

ElectrolysisThere are many methods of hair removal on the market with varying degrees of efficiency. It’s not that every method doesn’t remove hair, from razors to waxing, they all work. The variance is generally in the length of time between repeated treatments. Hair removal on the bikini line tends to be more difficult than in other areas. Shaving usually needs to be repeated at least once a week to eliminate new growth. The frequency with which depilatories and creams need to be used varies greatly depending on the ingredients, brand and hair type. Generally, they require re-application in two weeks to a month. Waxing, long held as the most effective method, only requires repeating every one to three months. However, electrolysis is a permanent hair removal treatment.

Electrolysis is a process in which electric current is applied to the root of the hair follicles. The high frequency or galvanic current passes through a very fine needle directed at the hair root. This method works well when applied to the bikini line because the more sensitive skin is not damaged as with other methods. Each hair is removed individually and permanently. The procedure is performed by a certified electrologist who determines the length of time needed in between multiple procedures necessary to remove all the hair in the desired area. Bikini line hair removal generally requires 5 – 8 procedures scheduled 6 – 8 weeks apart. The number of appointments and length of time between appointments are determined by the electrologist. Factors such as hair type, skin sensitivity and hair density contribute to the scheduling. Although rare, some re-growth is possible.

Electrolysis is a popular method of hair removal for the bikini line area due to the level of difficulty and frequency necessary in other treatments. Although the skin does require some recovery after application, the permanence of the removal eliminates the damaging effects caused by repeated shaving or waxing. There is also a reduced risk of allergic or topical reactions to the ingredients of creams and depilatories.

Bikini line electrolysis is performed in licensed spas. An appointment for a consultation should be scheduled before the process begins. At this time it is important for the client to address any concerns and questions. This will also be the time to receive an estimated treatment schedule and price. A completed electrolysis procedure for the bikini line can cost between $2,500 and $3,500 depending on hair type and thickness. If possible, have consultations with more than one spa to obtain the best price and assure comfort and confidence before beginning treatments.
