The occurrence of ingrown hair is often an irritating result of methods used for hair removal. This is particularly the case in the bikini area where the hairs tend to be curly and coarse and therefore more apt to develop the condition. It can cause a great deal of itching and discomfort in this sensitive area. Although ingrown hair is treatable, it is preferable to prevent them. There are several ways to keep ingrown hair from occurring.
Exfoliate
The entire body can be exfoliated with the use of loofahs, body scrub or shower gloves. Exfoliation reduces the accumulation of dead and old skin cells which can block hairs from their natural growth to the outside of the skin layer resulting in the occurrence of ingrown hair. Although it is recommended to exfoliate the skin at least twice per week, care should be taken not to overly irritate the area that has been treated for hair removal. Over-scrubbing can result in skin irritation.
Clothing
Because the skin of the bikini line is more sensitive than other areas, binding clothing can cause irritation. The area should be allowed to breathe as often as possible. White cotton underwear is better than dyed synthetics to keep this area healthy.
Cleansing
For best results, the skin of the bikini line can be treated like facial skin. Use a cleanser with antibacterial agents to reduce the accumulation of bacteria around hair follicles which can cause bumps. Astringents and toners can be applied to this area to more effectively clean and close open pores which will allow less dirt and oil to accumulate around the hair follicles. They also increase the health of the skin by removing dead skin cells. There are some products specifically intended for use on bikini areas.
Healing
The skin is particularly sensitive after hair removal procedures. Hydrocortisone cream can be applied to soothe and heal the irritated skin. Its use will also decrease swelling and the burning sensation that accompanies many treatments.
Hair Removal Methods
Ingrown hair is a common result of hair removal procedures. Their occurrence can be lessened by choosing a technique that requires less frequent applications like electrolysis. Since this process removes the hair follicle at the root, new growth is virtually eliminated resulting in lessened likelihood of ingrown hair.
